Argan oil is the product most people think of first when they hear "Moroccan beauty". It sells well in concept stores, spas and online shops, and customers already know the name. That popularity is also why the market is full of oils that are diluted, old or wrongly labelled. This guide explains what to look for when you buy argan oil wholesale, so the oil you put on your shelf is the oil your customers expect.
Where argan oil comes from
Argan oil is pressed from the kernels of the argan tree (Argania spinosa), which grows almost only in south-west Morocco, in the region around Agadir and Essaouira. Each fruit contains a hard nut, and each nut holds one to three small kernels. Cracking the nuts is still largely done by hand, often by women's cooperatives, which is one reason real argan oil is never cheap.
On an ingredient list, pure argan oil appears as Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil. If you see other oils listed before it, the product is a blend.
Cosmetic vs culinary argan oil
There are two kinds of argan oil, and they are not interchangeable.
Cosmetic argan oil is cold-pressed from raw, unroasted kernels. It is light golden, has a mild smell and is used on skin, hair and nails.
Culinary argan oil is pressed from roasted kernels. It is darker, smells strongly of toasted nuts and is used in Moroccan cooking.
For a beauty shop, spa or private label line, you want cosmetic argan oil. Make sure your supplier states clearly which one you are buying.
Deodorized or traditional?
Cosmetic argan oil has a natural, slightly nutty smell. Some customers love it, others don't. Deodorized argan oil goes through an extra step that removes most of the smell, which makes it easier to use in products where the scent matters.
A simple rule: traditional oil for customers who want the most natural product, deodorized oil for hotel amenities, massage use and formulas with their own fragrance. Many shops stock both.
How to spot diluted or low-quality argan oil
You can't test purity at home with certainty, but a few signs should make you ask questions:
- The price is far below the market. Real argan oil takes a lot of fruit and handwork to produce. A very low price usually means dilution.
- A strong perfume. Cosmetic argan oil should smell mild. A heavy fragrance can hide an old or mixed oil.
- A rancid or "crayon" smell. This usually means the oil is old or was stored badly.
- No batch number and no documents. A serious supplier can give you a batch number and a Certificate of Analysis (COA) for each batch.
Formats that sell
The right format depends on who you sell to:
- 10 to 30 ml dropper bottles for retail shelves, gift sets and online shops.
- 50 to 100 ml bottles for regular users and hair care.
- Larger bottles or bulk containers for spas and massage rooms, where oil is used in treatments rather than sold.
Glass bottles, ideally amber or dark, protect the oil from light. With a mixed order, you can start with a few formats and see which one sells before ordering more.
Documents to ask for
Before you place an order, ask your supplier for:
- A Certificate of Analysis (COA) for the batch, showing test results.
- A Safety Data Sheet (SDS), which some importers and marketplaces require.
- The full ingredient list (INCI) for labelling.
- The batch number and best-before date on every bottle.

Storage and shelf life
Argan oil keeps best in a cool place, away from direct light and heat. Unopened and stored well, it typically keeps for well over a year. Check the best-before date on each batch and sell older stock first.
The short version
Buy cosmetic (not culinary) argan oil, choose traditional or deodorized depending on your customers, avoid prices that look too good to be true, and always ask for a COA and batch number. Start with a small mixed order, learn what your customers buy, then reorder.
